I. Project Overview

This week, the main task was to complete the Pokémon card design project, which involved various aspects from coloring the initial line art to the final complete card design, including shaping the Pokémon's image, conceiving its skills, and filling in the card information.

II. Design Process

(A) Coloring the Line Art

  1. Basis for Color Selection
    • Colors were chosen according to the characteristics of the Pokémon (the one I designed named "Rageclaw"). Since "Rageclaw" is a Pokémon with powerful attacking abilities and a rather fierce appearance, black was selected as the main color to embody its mystery and intimidating presence. The inside of its mouth was chosen to be pink, creating a strong contrast with the black body to highlight its aggressiveness.
    • For the background color, considering that the Pokémon might inhabit an environment like a desert, which is dry and barren, the ground in the background was depicted in brown tones, cacti were drawn in blue-green, and the sky was painted in light blue to create an atmosphere that is both desolate and full of life.

(B) Refining Details

  1. Light and Shadow Effects
    • On the Pokémon's body, to emphasize the three-dimensional effect, highlights were added to the prominent parts such as the claws and the head. A lighter shade of gray than the main black color was used to represent the effect of light shining on it. The colors were deepened in the recessed and shaded areas of the body to create shadow effects, making the Pokémon look more three-dimensional and realistic.
    • For the cacti and clouds in the background, light and shadow treatments were also applied to enhance their realism. For example, the illuminated side of the cacti was brighter in color, while the shaded side was darker.
  2. Texture Details
    • Some textures were added to the Pokémon's body. For instance, on its black outer shell, some scale-like textures were drawn using lines to depict the rough texture of its skin, strengthening the characteristics of the Pokémon's image.

(C) Card Design

  1. Front Design
    • Name Area: In the center at the top of the card, the name of the Pokémon, "Rageclaw", was written in golden, metallic-textured font to make it prominent and in line with the powerful image of the Pokémon.
    • Skill Area
      • Left Column (Active Attack Skills)
        • Sky-splitting Claw
          • Skill Type: Physical Attack
          • Skill Effect: Attack with full force using sharp claws, dealing 80 points of physical damage.
          • Skill Cost: 20% of own stamina.
          • Skill Animation: The wings spread, the claws extend and turn red, and it attacks with a swooping motion, creating an air current.
        • Howl Impact
          • Skill Type: Special Attack
          • Skill Effect: Let out an angry howl. The sound-wave impact deals 60 points of special damage, and there is a 30% chance of confusing the opponent.
          • Skill Cost: 15% of own stamina.
          • Skill Animation: The body stands upright, the head is raised and the mouth opens, black air current is spouted out and a howl is made. The sound waves spread and cause damage.
      • Middle Column (Defense Skills)
        • Hard-shell Shield
          • Skill Type: Defense Skill
          • Skill Effect: The body contracts, and there is a 50% chance of halving the received damage.
          • Skill Cost: 10% of own stamina.
          • Skill Animation: The body curls up, the scales harden, and a golden light forms a shield.
        • Swift-wing
          • Skill Type: Speed-enhancing Skill
          • Skill Effect: The wings spread. There is a 70% chance of moving before the opponent. During the battle, there is a 20% chance of triggering again, increasing the speed by 30% for 1 - 2 rounds.
          • Skill Cost: 5% of own stamina for each trigger.
          • Skill Animation: The wings spread, the feathers stand on end, a blue air current surges, and the Pokémon is enveloped in blue electric light and accelerates.
      • Right Column (Ability Ratings)
        • Attack Rating: 8 out of 10
          • Reason: It has powerful attack skills. Sky-splitting Claw and Howl Impact are powerful, with good hit rates and fast-acting speeds.
        • Defense Rating: 6 out of 10
          • Reason: Although it has the Hard-shell Shield, its defense methods are relatively single, and it may not be able to fully resist continuous strong attacks.
        • Speed Rating: 7 out of 10
          • Reason: Swift-wing gives it a high chance of moving first and a certain speed increase, but there is still a gap compared to Pokémon that specialize in speed.
  2. Back Design
    • Background Story Area
      • Rageclaw inhabits the depths of the barren desert and has a fierce nature. In the cruel living environment, it has continuously evolved and dominated the area with its powerful skills. It likes to ambush in the sand, waiting for prey to approach, and then launch a sudden attack.
    • Evolution Chain Area (assuming evolution exists)
      • Rageclaw can evolve into Ragewing when it reaches level 35. (A simple sketch of the image of Ragewing can be drawn beside it, highlighting its larger wings and stronger body compared to Rageclaw)
    • Attribute-related Area
      • Advantageous Attributes:
        • It has an attack advantage over Grass-type Pokémon. The defense of Grass-type Pokémon can hardly resist the powerful attacks of Rageclaw.
        • It also has a certain advantage over Ground-type Pokémon. With its flying ability, it can attack from the air, making it difficult for Ground-type Pokémon to counter-attack.
      • Disadvantageous Attributes:
        • The special attacks of Electric-type Pokémon pose a great threat to Rageclaw, and the Hard-shell Shield has a poor defense effect against electric attacks.
        • Ice-type Pokémon can use the cold attribute to reduce the speed of Rageclaw, affecting its attack and 防御力 and defense capabilities.

III. Project Gains

  1. Artistic Skills
    • Learned how to select appropriate colors for coloring according to the characteristics of the character, and how to make the character more three-dimensional and vivid through the treatment of light and shadow and textures.
    • Mastered the layout design of Pokémon cards, including how to clearly display the key information of the Pokémon such as its name, skills, and ability ratings within the limited space.
  2. Creative Conception
    • Thought deeply about the design of Pokémon skills, which requires considering multiple factors such as the type, effect, cost, and animation performance of the skills to make them conform to the overall image and fighting style of the Pokémon.
    • Conceived the background story, evolution chain, and attribute compatibility relationships for the Pokémon, which made the Pokémon's image more complete and also exercised my creative and logical thinking abilities

I watched the design cases given to us by the teacher and found a direction for making posters.

I found three poster cases.

Quotes of the day: "Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still." - Dorothea Lange

I took these three photos respectively in the South Lake Park in my hometown, downstairs of my apartment near Taylor's University, and in the city of Kuala Lumpur.

I captured these moments with my camera. I think these three are quite suitable to be used as posters among all the photos I've taken. Then I used these three photos I took to create three posters respectively. There are stories behind each of these three photos.

I processed the color grading for each of them respectively, making them look suitable for being made into posters.

I did some very rough designing and drawing on them and determined the design direction of my posters.

Further design my posters.

I made three posters through these three photos I took. I will choose one as my final version.

             This is my final work

This is the draft and process of my designed poster

The huge monkey's paw in the center of the picture, as the core element of the novel, is a symbol of desire, greed and unknown power. Enlarged and placed in the center to emphasize its importance. The black silhouette and sharp claws create a mysterious and dangerous atmosphere, hinting at the terrifying consequences behind the wishes.

The red circular background is a key visual element. Red represents danger, warning and blood, symbolizing the bloody disaster in the process of the monkey's paw fulfilling wishes. It forms a sharp contrast with the black monkey's paw, enhancing the visual impact and firmly attracting the audience's attention. I will design the next posters in this direction.

This is the poster I designed

In terms of the artistic style, what I pursue is the perfect combination of simplicity and mystery. I don't want too many details and decorations to distract the audience's attention.

Instead, I hope to convey the core of the story directly through simple graphics and strong color contrasts. This simple design style can not only allow the audience to quickly grasp the key elements, but also add a mysterious atmosphere to the story, triggering their curiosity and speculation about the story content.

Through this poster cover, I hope to evoke the audience's fear and curiosity. The combination of red and black, the huge monkey's paw and the simple and powerful title together create an uneasy and tense mood, allowing the audience to feel the terror and mystery in the story the moment they see the poster.

The story

On a stormy night, the old wooden house trembled in the strong wind, and the candlelight flickered erratically inside.

There were several rolls of parchment on the table, and one of them was tightly pressed by a withered monkey's paw. Clearly written on the parchment were the words "Three Wishes". This monkey's paw was obtained by Old Jack from a mysterious traveler, who had warned him that although this monkey's paw could fulfill wishes, each wish would come at a terrifying price.

Old Jack had always been half-believing and half-doubting about this monkey's paw, but tonight in this strange atmosphere, he decided to give it a try. He picked up the monkey's paw and softly made his first wish to it: "I wish I had endless wealth."

In an instant, a bolt of lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the entire room. The monkey's paw seemed to move slightly, and then the room fell into dead silence. Old Jack looked around nervously, but nothing happened.

The final draft of the static comic

In terms of the production process, I first write the script based on the plot of the novel, decomposing the story into specific scenes and plots one by one. Then I carry out the storyboard design to determine the picture content, shot size, and camera movement method of each shot. Then carefully draw the design drawings of the characters and scenes, and determine the colors, styles, etc. Then use animation software for production, add keyframes, animation special effects, etc. Finally, add sound effects and background music to make the entire atmosphere more intense.

I hope that through my efforts, the "The Monkey's Paw" animation can bring a different experience to the audience and let everyone immerse themselves in this story full of mystery and horror.

I animated all the elements in these six storyboards and created this animation.
