1. Lectures

Although some font forms seem symmetrical, there are actually subtle asymmetrical differences, which create a unique aesthetic and dynamic feeling visually.

Designers achieve internal harmony and individual expression by adjusting the thickness and shape of strokes and the connection methods of letter components.

It is emphasized that maintaining consistency and simplifying character features in font design are important to improve readability and aesthetics.

Mentioned the letter forms in the Baskerville font family.

Emphasized the unique processing methods of each stroke and pointed out that although the overall is similar, there are necessary differences in some strokes.

Stated that over time, observers can recognize the differences and may have ideas for innovative fonts.

In font design, the curved stroke "s" needs to rise above the midline or sink below the baseline to ensure that its visual size is consistent with the adjacent vertical and horizontal strokes.

The midline is above the baseline, and it is a line that curved letters usually slightly exceed.

The top of the curved stroke and the space in contact with the midline are small, and optical adjustment is required to make it look the same size as the straight line.

This adjustment is crucial for maintaining the visual balance of the letter form, especially when considering the negative space outside the letter form.

Understanding these nuances is crucial for font design, typesetting, and layout.

When designing fonts, it is crucial to analyze the structure and form of existing letters.

Deconstructing and in-depth studying letters such as letter S and lowercase G can enable designers to better understand their composition and nuances.

Analyzing the processing methods of the same category of fonts is helpful for mastering design conventions and methods.

Letter S retains its characteristics when enlarged, while letter G may lose its identity.

3. Process Work

Week 6

I began searching for some references on the internet regarding editorial spread, and discovered what I found inspiring, and then worked based on that.

Week 7

I initiated the process on Adobe Illustrator to carry out the design for the first page of the spread. Then, I experimented with what appealed to me. Subsequently, I exported it and placed it in InDesign to incorporate text.

WEEK6

In this week I completed Submission Task 2 (consisting of a total of 4 files). For the JPEG files (with a resolution of 300 ppi and in grayscale), there were two types: those with grids and those without grids. Regarding the PDF files, there were also two types of content: with grids and without grids. I watched the lectures and, by using the design file I had made before, I completed the homework for this week. I exported the files from Adobe Illustrator software and imported them into Adobe InDesign software for typesetting design.

Week 7

In Week 7, I first initiated the design work in the Adobe Illustrator software, mainly for the page design, and tried a variety of design elements and methods that I was interested in. After completing the design, I exported it and then imported it into the InDesign software to add text content. Finally, I completed the main design tasks of this week and obtained corresponding results, such as the first version of the logo and the second version of the logo design, etc.

5. REFLETION

Initially, I was unsure about how to commence. After studying numerous examples of editorial spreads, I grasped how to make the spread look readable. However, I faced multiple difficulties. Firstly, it was challenging for me to come up with creative ideas and determine the appropriate text formatting. Additionally, I was at a loss regarding how to import files from Adobe Illustrator to Adobe InDesign. I was quite confused about how to proceed. Nevertheless, through considerable research and comprehension, I managed to complete the task in time.
